The ability to speak the language of data becomes one of the essential capabilities of the 21st century. In business, working with data is not reserved only for IT professionals anymore. Everybody should be able to understand basic concepts. The reason why many data analytics initiatives are underperforming is a communication gap between business and IT. Utilizing the potential in data requires a new set of skills. To be data literate does not demand a highly technical understanding of data, which might be required of a data scientist or analyst, but a person’s ability to read, write and communicate data in context.
Poor data quality and unauthorized access to data are significant threats to the business. To have data is not enough, there should be people responsible for owning them and clearly set processes and policies on how to protect and use them. Effective data governance ensures that data is consistent and trustworthy and doesn’t get misused. Data governance is a process of managing the availability, usability, integrity and security of data in enterprise systems.
Taking the fact that we have quality data and skilled professionals data analytics brings new insights and increase value of the business. Data analytics is a wide area involving handling data with a various kind of tools and providing many specific data analysis. On this blog, I focus mainly on problems related to the business intelligence area. Reporting, dashboarding and descriptive data analysis bring many challenges ranging from communication with stakeholders, data definition in source systems, and data transformation to final visualization in BI tools.
